Purpose of the Job:

Join Shoprite Group as an Assitant Operations Manager, playing a vital role in assisting the Operations manager to drive productivity, service excellence, stock integrity, compliance, cost management, and team leadership within our dynamic distribution centre. This position requires expertise in operational supervision, logistics coordination, and performance optimisation to ensure seamless daily operations that meet customer demands and uphold stringent business standards. Job Objectives:

  • Operational Management: Ensure operational efficiency and productivity targets are achieved. Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and operational standards. Support the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Receiving: Oversee the accurate and timely receiving of stock. Monitor receiving processes to minimize stock losses and discrepancies.
  • Stock Control: Maintain stock accuracy and integrity within the warehouse. Ensure regular stock investigations are conducted. Identify and address stock variances and operational risks.
  • Order Picking and Checking: Implement corrective actions where service levels are not achieved.
  • Loading and Dispatch: Monitor compliance with transport, food safety standards, and temperature setpoints. Engaging with the planning department regularly to communicate any changes.
  • Equipment Returns & Packaging Department: Manage crate control and accountability processes. Ensure accurate processing and reconciliation of crates & equipment. Accurate and systemmtic issuing of crates to farmers and the DC. Investigate and resolve discrepancies, complaints, & GRV/Invoice errors.
  • Production & FlowerCo Department: Support production planning and execution to meet customer demand. Monitor production efficiency and identify improvement opportunities Enforce document control at all times of all products moving in & out.
  • People Management: Lead, coach, motivate, and develop shift. Manage employee performance in line with company standards. Ensure employee attendance and productivity standards are maintained. Apply disciplinary procedures fairly and consistently when required.
  • Health, Safety and Compliance: Promote safe working practices throughout the operation. Ensure all operational audits and compliance requirements are achieved. Support food safety and quality management initiatives.

Qualifications:

Grade 12 (Matric) essential. Relevant tertiary qualification in Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations Management, Business Management, or related field will be advantageous.

  • Additional Requirements:
    • Valid driver's license.
    • Own reliable transport.
    • Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays when required.
    • Reliable attendance record.
    • Consistent track record of satisfactory job performance and professional conduct.

Experience:

Minimum 3–5 years' experience within a warehouse, logistics, or distribution environment. Proven management experience within operational/distribution functions. Experience in fresh produce, fruit and vegetables, or FMCG & Supply Chain environments is advantageous.

Knowledge and Skills:

Sound understanding of warehouse and distribution operations. Strong fruit and vegetable product knowledge. Knowledge of stock control and inventory management principles. Good understanding of employee relations and disciplinary procedures. Knowledge of Food Safety & HACCP standards & requirements. Strong leadership and experience in the outbound operation (Picking, Dispatch & Logistics) Knowledge of health and safety requirements within a warehouse environment.
